In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, Check Point’s latest report reveals a concerning trend: Microsoft stood out as the most targeted brand in phishing attacks during the first quarter of 2024, comprising a staggering 38% of all impersonation attempts. This figure marks a notable uptick from the previous quarter, where Microsoft accounted for 33% of such incidents.
Following closely behind, Google experienced a significant rise in phishing attempts, making up 11% of attacks, representing a three-percentage point increase compared to Q4 2023. Conversely, Amazon witnessed a notable decline in phishing incidents, dropping from 9% to 3% in Q1 2024.
Of particular interest is the surge in phishing attempts leveraging LinkedIn, which skyrocketed from 3% to 11% quarter-over-quarter. This spike aligns with increased job search activities typically observed at the onset of a new year.
Furthermore, the inclusion of Airbnb in the top 10 most impersonated brands list, capturing 1% of phishing attempts, underscores the relevance of seasonal trends, notably the Easter travel season.
The technology sector remains a prime target for cybercriminals due to its extensive utilization in both corporate and remote work environments.
Check Point’s research highlights the sophistication of phishing campaigns, particularly those impersonating Microsoft. These campaigns employed a variety of deceptive tactics, including false email subjects and sender identities, to lure recipients into divulging sensitive information.
As brand impersonation threats persist, it is imperative for individuals and organizations alike to maintain a heightened level of vigilance. By adopting proactive cybersecurity practices and exercising caution when interacting with emails or messages from trusted brands, users can effectively mitigate the risk of falling victim to cybercriminal tactics.
