The cyber crime unit in Gurugram recently made significant strides in combating fraudulent activities conducted through a gaming app. Their investigation led to the arrest of two individuals accused of orchestrating a scam that targeted unsuspecting victims with promises of lucrative work-from-home opportunities. The investigation was triggered by a complaint received on January 25, in which a victim reported falling victim to a cyber scam amounting to a staggering Rs 1 crore 13 lakh.
According to ACP Cyber Crime, Priyanshu Diwan, the victim recounted encountering an advertisement on Snapchat under the name “Reno Car Hire.” Intrigued by the offer, the victim provided personal details as prompted by the advertisement. Subsequently, the victim was approached by individuals through Telegram, who allured them with promises of earning money through remote work opportunities.
The victim, enticed by the prospect of earning money from the comfort of their home, fell prey to the scheme and ended up losing approximately Rs 1 crore 12 lakh 99 thousand. Prompt action by the police resulted in the arrest of two suspects identified as Jaildar Barar and Nitesh. During the interrogation process, it was revealed that Jaildar Barar was employed at AU Small Finance Bank, while Nitesh worked at Birla Insurance Company.
Jaildar Barar confessed that a significant portion of the defrauded amount, approximately Rs 26 lakh, was transferred to a bank account named Akhil Trading. This revelation sheds light on the sophisticated nature of the scam, involving multiple individuals and financial transactions across different accounts.
The arrest of these individuals marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against cyber crime. It underscores the importance of vigilance and awareness among the public regarding the risks associated with online interactions and offers that seem too good to be true. Authorities continue to urge citizens to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to prevent falling victim to such scams in the future.
