Japanese technology giant Fujitsu has reported a significant cybersecurity incident involving malware infecting its systems, resulting in the theft of customer data. Fujitsu, one of the world’s largest IT services providers, with a workforce of 124,000 and an annual revenue of $23.9 billion, offers a wide range of computing products, software, telecommunications equipment, and services, including cloud solutions and IT consulting.
In a recent announcement on its news portal, Fujitsu revealed that several of its business computers were found to be infected with malware, potentially leading to the unauthorized removal of files containing personal and customer-related information. Upon discovering the malware, Fujitsu promptly isolated the affected computers and implemented measures to strengthen monitoring of its systems.
The company is conducting an internal investigation to determine how the malware infiltrated its systems and what data may have been compromised. While there have been no reports of customer data misuse thus far, Fujitsu has notified the Personal Information Protection Commission and is preparing individual notices for affected customers.
This incident follows a previous breach in May 2021, where Fujitsu’s ProjectWEB information sharing tool was exploited to breach Japanese government agencies, resulting in the theft of sensitive data. Investigations revealed that hackers leveraged stolen credentials to carry out the breach.
In light of this latest breach, questions arise regarding the impact on Fujitsu’s corporate clients and consumers, as well as the number of individuals/entities affected. BleepingComputer has reached out to Fujitsu for further clarification on these matters.
The timing of the breach, occurring on a Monday morning, raises speculation about potential motives, including industrial espionage or political interference. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, prompting scrutiny into Fujitsu’s response and readiness to mitigate cybersecurity threats.
As Fujitsu navigates the aftermath of this breach, stakeholders and industry observers await further updates on the extent of the data compromise and the measures taken to prevent future incidents.
