Despite feeling confident in their security measures, organizations are increasingly falling victim to sophisticated image-based and QR code phishing attacks, according to recent research conducted by IRONSCALES and Osterman Research.
The study found that while 70% of organizations believed their current security stacks were effective against such attacks, a staggering 76% still experienced compromises over the past year. This disconcerting trend highlights the evolving nature of cyber threats and the challenges faced by organizations in defending against them.
One of the key findings of the research was the high level of awareness among IT and security professionals regarding image-based and QR code phishing attacks, with 93% acknowledging the threat. Despite this awareness, less than 6% of organizations were able to consistently detect and prevent these attacks from reaching user inboxes.
The research also shed light on the inadequacy of existing training programs in preparing users to recognize and resist these threats, with 76% of organizations admitting their training programs were insufficient.
Eyal Benishti, CEO of IRONSCALES, emphasized the need for organizations to reassess their email security strategies in light of these findings. He stressed the importance of integrating advanced detection technologies, comprehensive user training, and a reevaluation of current security measures to address the nuanced risks posed by image-based and QR code phishing attacks.
As the frequency and sophistication of these attacks continue to rise, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to defend against them. Failure to do so could result in significant financial and reputational damage.
Stay tuned for further updates as organizations ramp up their defenses against this evolving threat landscape.
